OVER 18? Yes.
CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Jean-jacques Leroy, Rohan Kishibe

CHARACTER
NAME: Louis
CANON: Beastars
CANON POINT: Post-Chapter 147 (after drinking Kopi Luwak with Shishigumi & Legosi)
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: I'm going to be fair to you all and add a content warning over this because there are mentions of children being sold and being eaten.

Beastars takes place in a world of animals. Herbivores and carnivores live side by side, and coexist (though not always peacefully). While meat is outlawed, technically, it's not a frequently respected law and many carnivores indulge through either predation or visiting Back Alley Markets. Some frequently used terminology:
Back Alley Market - Black Market
Shishigumi - A gang/mafia organization of lions
Predation - eating of another living animal

Early Life ;
• Nothing is known about Louis' birth parents. He was born to be livestock in the Back-Alley Market to be eaten by carnivores. He watched young herbivore friend, after friend, get sold and - presumably killed and eaten. Because he was to be livestock, Language (speech and reading) was not learned. His right foot was branded with "4" - so this is what they called him there.
• When Louis was 4, Oguma visits the market where Louis is being sold, and buys the fawn for 7 million yen. As Oguma is unable to reproduce, Louis is to be his heir. In the first meeting, Louis resists. Oguma tosses him to a room of hungry carnivores with a knife to see what he'd do. Louis puts the knife to his throat - he'd rather die than be eaten. Oguma is surprised, and impressed, and pulls Louis back. He tells Louis at that moment he'll change the world and turn his own pain into strength.

Childhood;
• Only a small note here - since we only learn that Louis grew up spoiled. He received a great education. Oguma spoiled Louis and sent him some rather mixed messages. Even when Louis failed, Oguma spoiled him with things. He notes that it confused him when he was young.

Early High School;
• He entered a secret relationship with Haru, a white dwarf rabbit. This relationship remained a secret from classmates and family (Louis is - at this point - in an arranged engagement). He has been sleeping with her from this point to early on in his third year.
• He aspired, during this time, to be the next Beastar.

Third Year - The year where shit went down.
• Before the New Year performance, a herbivore classmate was murdered by a fellow (unknown at the time) classmate. This leaves everyone on edge. Prior to the performance Louis recruits Legosi to assist him, and the wolf even steps in to assist him. Louis takes this time to work extra hard to set a good example for the students they would be performing for, the result is he breaks a leg (literally), and passes out at the end of the first day's performance.
• During the second performance, Bill fills in as Adler and is caught with Rabbit blood. He and Legosi fight on stage and Louis, despite his broken leg, breaks up the fight, shoos away Bill, a tiger, and covers up the incident.
• Haru gets abducted by the Shishigumi. While Legosi runs a rescue mission, Louis opts not to help her, but he does show up to shoot the leader of the Shishigumi in the head.

Shishigumi & Onwards; "Boss"
• After killing the leader of the Shishigumi, he takes over. Not a lot of details are included on this, but he drops out of school. Being in charge of the Shishigumi made them look good - a deer who was in charge of a group of large carnivores. They follow him willingly and easily. He ate meat to be accepted, and eventually Ibuki - his most trusted, feeds him salad and tells him he doesn't need to pretend. He is with the Shishigumi for several months.
• Legosi tells him, while visiting a bar in drag, that he has figured out who the murderer was from earlier in the year. He tells Louis that he wants him to be there for the fight and Louis immediately refuses because his life is now the Back Alley Market.
• See how I said he refused? Well. That refusal lasts all up until the day of the fight, when Louis says that he wants to leave the Shishigumi. It's not easy, but in order for him to get out, Ibuki is forced to attack him and get shot by Free. Free tells Louis he can never return to the Back Alley Market.
• He shows up to the fight just as Legosi is nearly dying, and they run away from Riz. Here, they have a very meaningful conversation, which results in Louis offering up his foot to Legosi. And - for the first time ever - have a very confused cry in fear at the loss of his friend.
• Legosi eats his foot, after being enabled by Louis. (It ends up getting Legosi in trouble with the law and Predation remains on your record).
• Post fight, he reunites with his father and they are working on repairing their relationship that has always been off. Oguma buys Louis an expensive prosthetic, and soon the boy returns to school.
• Back in school, he turns down the opportunity to be the Beastar, a title he once aspired for, since he believed he didn't deserve it. He does agree to be the class representative, though.
• He graduates, goes to college, and seems to be living pretty normally. He visits Legosi in the hospital and has a heart to heart chat, then doesn't hear from his friend for awhile.
• Louis makes his way into the Back Alley Market and his antlers shed there when he runs into the Shishigumi. They are happy to see him, despite previous warnings not to be seen there again. This is the first time he sees Melon in the flesh, and what has happened to the Shishigumi since he left.
• Louis meets up with his fiance - and after a night with her, he gets a call from the Shishigumi to rejoin them. He agrees and they set out on the path to meet up with a Civet who has information on Melon, the current threat.
• During this, Louis leads the way and helps guide Legosi's relationship with the Shishigumi. They get more information about Melon, and Louis enjoys his time with the Shishigumi before leaving after they suggest he does because he looks 'delicious'.

PERSONALITY:
Leader; This is easily Louis' most prevalent quality throughout the series. At the start, he's the leader of the drama club. The fellow students consider him a strong, good decision maker.

Another instance of his leadership skills being shown as strong is the Shishigumi. Legosi calls him the deer that tames lions. He worked hard to gain their respect, through eating meat to fit in, or making difficult choices in the Back Alley Market to make the Shishigumi look good. They were so devoted to him and his leadership that they would die for him.

When it comes to being a leader, he does what he thinks is best, even if others don't love them. When he makes that choice - people listen to him, whether it's in Drama Club or with the Shishigumi.

Currently, the Shishigumi went so far as to refuse to work with Legosi unless he brought Louis back to help, even after he'd been warned he can't come back. They wanted him there. They listen to him, respect him, and enjoy his company. They believed he made the Shishigumi better and say it was best under his leadership.

Leadership isn't thrust upon him, either - he wants to lead because he wants to be the one who makes the decisions, since he is driven to make the world a better place for herbivores and carnivores alike - and there's no better way to do that than to lead. He gains these leadership positions through charm, strength, and work.

Inferiority Complex & Prey; Louis is called strong by his peers, but the main reason that he appears so strong is because he feels the opposite. Louis feels inferior to and weaker than large carnivores. This is a huge driving factor into why he works as hard as he does. He loses it if people see him as weak for a moment. He is a prey animal, and he is used to his lot in life, but he always works as hard as he does to push beyond what he was naturally given. He says that Carnivores are strong and is envious of Legosi being naturally gifted and not using it.

Mature & Controlled; Louis is a relatively unemotional person. He knows how to manage himself in difficult situations. He is unafraid to make the hard choices that others may not be able to, or would be willing to do. Louis, when he believes Legosi is going to die - cries for the very first time. Even when he was young and saw other kids die - no tears. He doesn't understand it when it happens because he has spent so long keeping things so deeply repressed and controlled. He does this because he wants to be perceived as strong, and he believes showing emotions such as fear and sadness would ruin that. This maturity does slip from time to time and he acts like a regular 18 year old, but it's so infrequent that others call it out.

Relationships; Friendship is a long, one-sided process with Louis. Legosi put in a lot of the effort that helped the two of them become friends. While he seems to want people to like and respect him, he keeps most people at an arm's length. When he decides you are his friend, he will literally give up a limb for you if he cares for you. He is a fully devoted friend to Legosi, and this is the best example of real friendship with Louis in the series. Even with how important he considers Legosi, he doesn't know the details of Louis' life. That is to say: trust is very, very hard earned with him.

Even though Legosi is most treasured, friendliness isn't impossible once the initial barriers break down. He'll sometimes tease, make jokes with, and sass others. However, strangers typically get the actor, so he can have full control over their perception.

Zero Chill; Louis has a bad habit as using violence as a way to get what he wants. This starts early, and it is a behavior learned because of his early life being in the Back Alley Market, which is a pretty violent and awful place. He pushes Legosi, pulls a gun on a classmate, threatens to kill himself, grabs a classmates face when he's having issues grasping the script, and has told Legosi to bite him. Given, Louis has to be driven to a place where he'll use this, but clearly he'll resort to this if his natural charm doesn't work. As long as it is a means to an end.

Hardworking & Strong; Louis has obtained everything through hard work. He was born at a disadvantage, so while some of these skills might have been natural with nurturing, he started from behind everyone else in his age group. Oguma told him the day he adopted him that he would use his pain and suffering as strength, so Louis always continues to work from that. He will work himself to the point of injury when he sets his mind to something. And then he will proceed to hide this injury until his body literally gives up. Louis works hard to not be seen as weak. There is nothing he hates more than being seen as weak.

Actor; Almost as important as being a leader, Louis is an actor. He knows how to act in specific situations. He knows how to behave when it's professional, when he's with friends, when he's with the Shishigumi. He frequently adjusts to situations, and is good at reading them in order to do so. This isn't to say he's a different person at any given time - he's not. He just knows how to pull the proper side of himself. This is a skill he learned form his father. His ability to act supports him at all times.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
No powers to note. He's smart, a good leader, he has good night eyesight because he's a deer. When his antlers shed they grow back at super anime speed. He was also taught, by the Shishigumi, how to incapacitate a larger predator by pulling their tail. He also has a pretty decent shot with a pistol.

- Gun (no bullets)

SAMPLES

Louis saw Lunatia as a new opportunity. It was a chance for him to learn something that he could bring home, with a chance of improving it. The people here seemed to live peacefully, with a few exceptions. He knew better than to think that things always were exactly as they appeared, having been born in the Back Alley Market, but for now - he wouldn't let himself think too hard of it. He would let himself enjoy a new chance he was given. He wouldn't cause a fuss unnecessarily. Though if he found something he couldn't live with while here, he absolutely would do something about it. He wouldn't be able to stop himself from saying or doing something.

This place was filled with things he hadn't experienced before. Humans were a non-existent animal. And while Prismals were more similar to himself than they were, they were still quite different. It was a process, he knew. He didn't let himself appear to be making mistakes along the way, though. No one was allowed to know that he wasn't totally confident in each in every interaction. His theater training at home was coming in handy.

Earning Chroma wasn't particularly difficult, he was finding. While at home, everyone respected his boundaries. Underclassmen feared him, the Shishigumi respected him. Both respected his boundaries that he had so neatly set up. For the most part, at least. He liked things that way, too. He didn't want people needlessly in his space. Especially people here - they were strangers. They weren't trusted.

They asked, though. Many of the people he interacted with asked before entering his bubble. They asked before seeing if they could pet his head or scratch his ear (Do they think I'm a stupid caninine? he'd ask himself every time). He often let them pet him, it generated Chroma and was usually short lived and a quick buck. During the Iris moons, this happened more frequently, he noticed. Maybe they thought he was one of those needy people who took on features much like his own. He wasn't. He had to try not to always act so insulted when that conversation happened. He'd bristle, try to laugh it off, but it was hard for him to.

He got asked by six separate individuals on his way to a cafe if they could pet his head. So he had six opportunities to earn a little bit of extra cash and bring a few more treats home for himself. His favorite cafe was nestled into PrismaPlace. He knew the woman working at the front counter. He knew that she liked when he smiled, gently brushed her fingers when she gave him his bag. He knew if he complimented her outfit, her hair, or makeup that day - she'd give him a little extra treat. He knew that if he asked her what her favorite cookie of the day was, she'd give him an extra one at no charge.

He wondered if she did it for everyone.

But honestly, he didn't care if she didn't. After all, one must work for what one wants, even if it's simply a discounted fruit jelly or a slice of Castella cake that's just a bit bigger than every other customer gets.

He left the cafe, less a bit of Chroma, but he had three fruit jelly, a home made yogurt filled with strawberries, two cookies, and a large piece of Castella cake. As soon as he stepped foot outside, he shoved one of the cookies into his mouth and started to eat it as he walked forward. He considered for a moment stopping by his favorite clothing shop, but he knew the main shopkeeper there hated food being brought in, and he wasn't sure he could talk his way out of a bag full of sweets.

Maybe next time.
